A LEVELLER

When we met our clients, their garden was uninviting, with a large drop from the top terrace down to an unloved lawn. They dreamt of a courtyard style garden with levels which were seamlessly connected, where they could relax and recharge and entertain. Garden designer Janice Cripps worked closely with them to create a design which ticked all of their boxes.

    CLIENT & DESIGNER BRIEF

The clients envisaged a clean, contemporary design which made the most of the views from the house which allowed safe and easy access to all areas. They wanted a paved courtyard with low maintenance planting which allowed for some privacy from the neighbouring properties. The colour palette needed to create a mediterranean feel and ambient lighting was to be included to help bring a sense of tranquility into the evening.

Despite the different levels of the garden, it needed to invite you down without looking too much like a set of steps, and invite you to spend time out there all year round.

All of this needed to be within their budget and take into account their order of preferences - so Janice engaged in a 2 way design process to enable the clients to continue to refine their ideas as new possibilities were suggested. This way they were able to make informed choices and to keep control of the project and of the costs.

    CHALLENGES FACED

Part of the challenge was to create flow between the different levels of the garden without it feeling like a functional set of steps, It needed to blend into the rest of the garden and invite down. Initially the challenge seemed to be fitting in all the features within the clients budget, however, as the start date drew nearer it became apparent that the pandemic was going to be a much bigger challenge.

    MATERIALS & WHY?

Beige Porcelain and cream render were used to provide a mediterranean feel to the space. The light colours helped the garden feel bigger and brighter while providing a contrast to the newly built garden studio.

We fitted new boundary fences using Jackson’s Venetian hit and miss panels which adds a contemporary finish and backdrop to both sides of the garden. The clients initially wanted bespoke cedar cladding but unfortunately the budget didn’t stretch that far so these panels gave a similar effect at a lower price point.

    PROMINENT FEATURES

The dominant feature in the garden is undoubtedly the summerhouse/studio but the most attractive and interesting feature is the set of steps and how they gently connect the two levels in the garden, making it effortless to move from one part to another whilst also providing additional seating.

The soft lighting adds another dimension the garden, extending the enjoyment of the space into the evening by create an ambience which is more intimate and subdued - strip lighting under the bench adds a soft glow, step lights and an up lit acer tree keep it soft and supple

    SUMMARY OF PROJECT

    FINAL GALLERY
One of our main objectives was to turn a simple yet timeless design into a high quality reality with real attention to detail to elevate it to showstopping levels. The result is a clutter free, pared back aesthetic which will be easy to maintain and stand the test of time. The beauty is in the simplicity of the design, the restraint shown in the planting palette and choice of materials and the skill of the workmanship and attention to detail. The clients (and their neighbours) are delighted with the design and execution which has given them their dream relaxing and entertaining space.
