Collaborating with Rigden Studio, we were proud to construct this beautifully considered garden, designed for a period property in Godalming. The design blends family-friendly functionality with strong architectural references, featuring a sustainable gravel garden, a resilient clover lawn for play, and a wildlife-rich rear garden inspired by the Surrey landscape. Working closely with Rigden Studio, we brought their vision to life, creating a space that is environmentally responsible, visually cohesive, and perfectly suited to both the home and its natural surroundings.

This Godalming garden design was carefully crafted to reflect and enhance the character of the period property it surrounds. Drawing inspiration from the home’s vernacular architecture and rectilinear brickwork, the scheme blends gentle organic forms with subtle geometric detailing to create a cohesive and contemporary outdoor space.
A soft, low-maintenance clover lawn was chosen to provide a practical and family-friendly play area. This natural lawn alternative not only offers a resilient surface for children but also supports local pollinators and boosts seasonal interest, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable landscape. The result is a period property garden that combines everyday usability with long-term ecological benefits.
Central to the design is a sustainable gravel garden, selected for its ability to respond to the local soil, microclimate, and wider Surrey landscape. This style of garden offers a water-wise solution, ideal for dry conditions, and creates a planting environment where drought-tolerant and wildlife-friendly species can thrive.
The gravel surface enables a low-carbon hardscape, reducing the need for resource-intensive materials while still providing structure, visual interest, and excellent drainage. This approach results in a low-maintenance garden that remains attractive throughout the year and aligns with modern sustainability goals, making it an appealing choice for homeowners seeking an environmentally responsible design.
The rear garden takes cues from the wooded glades characteristic of the Surrey countryside, creating a secluded and tranquil retreat. Designed as a wildlife-friendly garden, it is intentionally enclosed to block outside views, offering a peaceful space for relaxation, reflection, and reconnecting with nature.
Striking specimen trees punctuate the garden, shaping the layout and providing height, structure, and biodiverse value. At its heart, a reflective water pool serves as both an aesthetic focal point and a vital resource for birds, insects, and other wildlife. This feature enhances the ecological richness of the garden while adding movement and serenity to the space.
The finished design delivers a beautifully balanced, nature-led garden that supports local wildlife, suits the architectural style of the home, and offers the homeowners a sanctuary that evolves beautifully throughout the seasons.
