Working with a husband-and-wife team of architects, we were given a clear and thoughtful vision—not only for how the space would be used, but also for how it should look and feel. Though compact in size, this meticulously designed and finely detailed Surbiton garden exceeded expectations and truly delivered.

Working in such a confined space presented numerous challenges, requiring every aspect of the project to be executed with precision and care. Access to the site was only possible through the client’s home, which was in constant use by a young family. It was therefore essential to keep the work area spotless, with floors fully protected and the property left each evening as though no work had taken place. With only a 1.6m x 4m front garden available for deliveries, material logistics had to be timed perfectly to ensure a smooth and unobstructed workflow.
The hard landscaping began with reinforced concrete footings to support boundary walls and raised planters, all constructed in rendered blockwork and finished in crisp white paint. Porcelain paving and granite cobbles were set out in clean geometric lines, divided by slim 100mm strips of resin-bound marble chippings for contrast and definition. Western Red Cedar joinery brought warmth and character, featuring a bespoke “invisible” gate built seamlessly within one of the panels.
A standout feature was the bespoke brick barbecue, designed to complement the outdoor dining area. It was built using reclaimed, fireproof bricks salvaged from Greenscape Gardens director Carl’s own chimney breast — a personal and sustainable touch that gave the project unique meaning. Together, these elements created a functional and elegant garden that balanced craftsmanship, design precision, and a deep respect for materials, transforming a small urban space into a tranquil and beautifully finished outdoor retreat.
The garden’s design centred around a sophisticated grey and blue palette, blending contemporary white rendered walls with warm Western Red Cedar cladding. Limestone was initially chosen for the paving, but after careful consideration, Marshalls Symphony vitrified porcelain tiles were selected for their durability, low maintenance, and colour longevity. Charcoal black granite cobbles were laid in defined bands to introduce texture and prevent the floor area from appearing flat. The grey tones were punctuated by resin-bound marble joints, adding visual interest while maintaining a unified design language.
Western Red Cedar was again used for its striking colour and grain, softening the modern aesthetic with natural warmth. Treated with two coats of acrylic preserver, it will gracefully weather while retaining its rich tones. Among the garden’s most distinctive features were a handcrafted cedar bench designed for comfort and proportion, textured cladding panels that broke up expanses of white, and a bespoke water feature with concealed pipework and a 600mm waterfall.
Soft landscaping tied the project together, preserving a cherished mature wisteria and introducing new planting in complementary purples, silvers, and blues. Verbena Bonariensis added height, movement, and a relaxed charm, while a small living green section allowed the clients to grow herbs and enjoy added fragrance.
This project epitomised Greenscape Gardens Ltd’s commitment to excellence. Every detail — from the placement of cobbles to the alignment of timbers, reflected pride in craftsmanship. The result was a stunning, functional space that the clients can enjoy for many years to come.
